What does ABV Sciences do? Brain Activity Analysis Consulting For: Development of Pharmaceuticals & Serious Games
ABV Sciences does both research and development on brain activity and behavioural analysis technology and provides consulting using these technologies to help clients understand how their treatments and therapies affect brain function.
Our core technologies are MOST-EEG (Multiple Origin Spatio-Temporal) EEG analysis and MOR-EEG (Multiple Origin Relational) EEG analysis. MOST-EEG helps us understand how the brain functions in the context of a variety of paradigms and MOR-EEG helps us understand how the brain function of individuals various from the norm.
Who Are Our Clients?
We apply these technologies in a consulting practice in to main areas:
(1) pharmaceutical development, and (2) development of serious video games (behavioural therapies).
Our client base includes organizations developing treatments and therapies for central nervous system (CNS) disorders, or investigating characteristics of CNS diseases. These diseases include and are not limited to Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and Schizophrenia. These may be private organizations or public institutions. Our clients also include organizations that develop and sell video games design providing behavior-based therapies and training.
Below is a video of a recent television interview that shows an equipment setup used in a recent university study of brain activity and spatial navigation cognition. In this particular study, investigators used a 1st-person perspective video game environment to elicit the brain activities and cognition of interest.
What do Pharmaceuticals and Video games Have In Common?
What pharmaceuticals and video games have in common is the ability to change how our brains work. Pharmaceuticals do this through molecular processes, while video games provide the opportunity to change our brains through our behaviour. Changes in our behaviour are related to changes in our brain, and our brains can be changed through behavioural experience and practice. Neuroplasticity is occurring when networks in our brains re-wire themselves, leading to strengthening or weakening of ‘pathways’. So, as we practice behaviours that use particular brain pathways, these pathways are more likely to be used again on future occasions. Similarly, if a particular pathway is not used very often, then it is even less likely to be used in the future. Our behavioural experiences thus shape our brains. We can take advantage of both neuroplasticity and pharmaceutical influences to improve our brain function.
How we Work With Our Clients
In order to test for, and understand, the effects of behavioural and pharmaceutical therapies on brain function we work with the client to create a study to collect electroencephalographic, eye-movement, and behavioural data. We then employ our analysis methodologies (MOST-EGG and MOR-EEG) to create brain-function models to show how multiple parts of the brain have been affected and how subsets of participants diverge from the ‘average’. This information is passed on to our client to help them learn about their treatment and develop future treatments.
Providing Our Clients with the Latest Technological Resources
As an organization, ABV Sciences remains competitive by continually improving our algorithms, learning about brain function, and providing clients with as much actionable information as possible. It is our company mantra to develop-apply-improve on a continued basis as we increase our knowledge about how the brain functions and how we can affect brain function. Our most recent technology is described on our Technology page.
